“I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.” -D.H.Lawrence
I look around in my daily life, on social media and in the street and what I see is a mass of undriven people, who want for nothing but my and your sympathy. This despite the fact that by and large they have lived more comfortable lives than nearly any group of people in history. Where at one time a man would say I think therefore I am, the sheltered and foolish of today being so deceived by a lack of context regarding anything outside their own immediate existence, seem to live by the motto I feel, therefore I deserve.
We as a society have been made soft and weak by the comfortable world that strong people have built for us; we have forgotten the animals we really are. Our skin, muscles, bones and blood are adapted to live and die in the world of beasts, where death and pain are simply another rotation in the wheel of life. A deer will run from a predator with all it’s strength to the point that is overheats and dies because it’s drive to live compels it to such lengths. A predator will stick it’s claws into another creature, bathing in its blood because it wants to live. Neither hates the other, and neither is wrong for wanting to live, and so when the deer is taken down and bleeds out on the forest floor, nobody shames the predator. Likewise, when the deer escapes and the predator starves, nobody shames the deer. They are doing what is in their nature to do.
We are not doing what is in our nature, because we have separated ourselves from nature. People seem to confuse the rules and ideals of society with those of nature. They believe that because our facade of a world espouses fairness and justice, that they have been wronged by the natural world when it is unfair or unjust. Well, our world is not the natural world. The natural world does not care if you are equal, or if you are good, or if you deserve. The natural world is a place of cause and effect, and there is no place in it reserved for morality.
Ultimately, the world most of us live in is simply a lucid dream; a peaceful comfortable illusion within the very rough reality we were meant to inhabit. That is why I will not give you or anyone my pity. I will not pity you when you break a bone, or are cheated on. I will not pity you when you get sick or when you experience loss. When you are treated unfairly or when you feel disrespected.
You do not rate pity from myself or anyone, and you never will. None of us do.
Humans are strong. We have to be because that is what the natural world that produced us demands. For me to pity you, I would have to deny your very humanity. For me to pity you, you would have to be so weak, so incapable of existence in a world unshielded by our philosophical beliefs about morality and justness that I could not see you and I as sharing anything in soul or corpus. You would have to somehow be something less-than.
I will never pity a person who does not seek pity, because the second you ask me to pity you, and I oblige, you are no longer a person. You become something the natural world would not tolerate. You, then, are not worth the air you breath, the food you eat, or the energy it would cost me to acknowledge your existence. So if you’re reading this please do not every ask for pity or sympathy from me; because that’s the last thing you should ever want.
